Description
In 2026 we celebrate the 50th anniversary of a significant milestone in Knock’s history and development – the construction of the Basilica of Our Lady, Queen of Ireland. With its impressive spire clearly visible across the Western skyline, this iconic church was constructed in honour of Our Lady, Queen of Ireland under the leadership of Monsignor James Horan and was dedicated in 1976 to provide for the thousands of pilgrims who visit Knock Shrine each year.
Three years later, Monsignor Horan warmly welcomed Pope John Paul II during the centenary celebrations, who the new church to status of Basilica. For the past half century, Knock Basilica has stood as a beacon of hope to all those who visit this sacred place from near and far. In 1993, Mother Teresa addressed thousands of pilgrims from the outdoor altar and in 2018, Pope Francis prayed the Angelus in the processional square in which it is situated.
Over the years, Knock Basilica saw many improvements and enhancements under the leadership of Monsignor Dominic Greally and Monsignor Joseph Quinn. As current rector of Knock Shrine, Fr. Richard Gibbons led the ‘Witness to Hope’ programme, which culminated in the extensive refurbishment of the Basilica for its 40th anniversary in 2016.
