St. Brigid’s Cross Making Workshop

Knock Museum  is delighted to welcome professional craft worker  Patricia Flaherty once again for her hugely popular St. Brigid’s Cross making workshop on Friday, January 31st 2020 from 11.30am to 12.30pm.  Patricia specialises in rush and willow work and  is a qualified craft teacher with over 20 years experience in business.

February 1st is the Feast of St. Brigid, one of the patron saints of Ireland. The story of St. Brigid’s  cross is a familiar one.  Brigid wove the form of a cross from the rushes on the floor of the house of a pagan chieftain, who she was trying to convert to Christianity on his deathbed. And upon hearing the significance of the cross and the story of Jesus asked to be baptized immediately. The making of the cross has many meanings and stories; one tradition is that the cross is hung over the door as a way of protecting the household from harm. Another tradition is that a new cross is made each year on St. Brigid’s day, and the old one hanging from the year before is then burned to protect the house from fire.

Many of us remember making St. Brigid’s crosses in primary  school, but we may well have forgotten the skill! Why not come join us a very enjoyable, sociable  hour?

Admission is free and all are welcome but booking is advisable on 094 93 75034 or Email: museum@knockshrine.ie
