Walking the Synodal Pathway together

The Synodal Pathway

A large, majestic tree, full of wisdom and light, reaches for the sky. A sign of deep vitality and hope which expresses the cross of Christ. It carries the Eucharist, which shines like the sun.

The horizontal branches, opened like hands or wings, suggest, at the same time, the Holy Spirit.

The people of God are not static: they are on the move, in direct reference to the etymology of the word synod, which means “walking together”.

The people are united by the same common dynamic that this Tree of Life breathes into them, from which they begin their walk.

Diocesan Synodal Pathway
October 2021- April 2022

On October 9-10th in Rome Pope Francis launched the theme of the 2023 Synod of Bishops – For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, Mission. The diocesan phase of the Synod was introduced in every parish across the Archdiocese of Armagh on October 17th 2021. The diocesan phase which involves all local Churches across the globe is the largest consultation with the lay faithful ever to take place and examines what life is like in the Church at this moment in time.

Prayer for the Synod

We stand before You, Holy Spirit, as we gather together in Your name.

With You alone to guide us, make Yourself at home in our hearts;

Teach us the way we must go and how we are to pursue it.

We are weak and sinful; do not let us promote disorder.

Do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path nor partiality influence our actions.

Let us find in You our unity so that we may journey together to eternal life and not stray from the way of truth and what is right.

All this we ask of You, who are at work in every place and time, in the communion of the Father and the Son, forever and ever.

Amen.

What does this mean?

Pope Francis has called the whole Church to a Synodal way.

Synodality indicates walking together and listening to one another and to the Holy Spirit. It starts with, and involves all across the world, promising to listen to all. “This is a pathway, not a run-way.” This is a 2-year process, leading up to the Synod in Rome in October 2023.

The purpose of the Synod

To plant dreams, draw forth prophecies and visions, allow hope to flourish, inspire trust, bind up wounds, weave together relationships, awaken a dawn of hope, learn from one another and create a bright resourcefulness that will enlighten minds, warm hearts and give strengths to our hand.

– Pope Francis
