Knock has always been a place of welcome, sanctuary and sacredness, a place for people to join together in prayer and worship. It is with great honour that we welcome pilgrims and visitors here every year and share with them a great sense of peace and comfort.
Pilgrimage is a sacred and ancient tradition in Ireland. By leaving ordinary life behind, pilgrims gain time and space for reflection. They join others in a quest to experience the presence of God. They grow in awareness that, on life’s journey, there are no strangers only fellow pilgrims.
Pope Francis has officially named Knock as a Eucharistic and Marian Shrine. Giving this honour in a special address, Pope Francis asked that here at Knock Shrine, we accept to always have our arms wide open as a sign of welcome to every pilgrim who may arrive from any part of the world, asking nothing in return but only recognising him as a brother or a sister who desires to share the same experience of fraternal prayer.
We trust that you will leave this sacred place refreshed in faith and renewed in spirit.
