Residential Icon Writing Retreat with Mihai Cucu: 31 August to 05 September 2026

Icon Writing Retreat

31st August to 5th September 2026

5 Nights at the Retreat Village at Knock Shrine

Enter into the ancient and prayerful tradition of Icon Writing during this five-night residential retreat in the quiet surroundings oftThe Retreat Village at Knock Shrine.
Guided by acclaimed iconographer Mihai Cucu, participants will be gently led through the process of creating their own hand-written icon – not simply as an artistic exercise, but as a
contemplative journey of prayer, presence and attentive seeing.

In the Christian tradition, icons are often described as “windows into the sacred.” Through colour, silence, symbol and patient attention, this retreat offers space to slow down, to become still and
encounter the holy in a deeper way.

Mihai Cucu is an iconographer from Romania, writing and teaching icons for almost 20 years. He studied restoration of icons at the University of Arts, Iasi, Romania and did his practical
training in numerous Monasteries from Romania for many years. Mihai’s icons are to be found in private and public collections around the world. In Ireland they may be seen in Dublin’s Pro
Cathedral, Christ Church Cathedral, Holy Cross Church Dundrum, The University of Galway, and many other locations. He is best known for the triptych icon of The Holy Family,
commissioned for the World Meeting of Families in 2018.
